WSNWCB: Role and Priorities
The Board seeks to improve coordination of the combined statewide efforts for
noxious weed control by:
- Determining and adopting the state noxious weed list
- Gathering and distributing information on noxious weed species and
control strategies.
- Coordinating training, technical assistance, control strategies, and
educational program development at county, state, and regional level
- Supporting and promoting the activation of local weed control boards
- Assisting in the development and promotion of biological control
projects
- Conducting and supporting prevention programs and early detection
surveys, including the development of statewide integrated weed management
plans for specific species
- Promoting cooperation, compliance, and coordination of weed control
activities between
- 38 county weed boards
- 11 weed districts
- 12 state and federal land management agencies
- 34 Indian nations
- two neighboring states
- and one province
Through its strategic planning process, the Board has set goals and
priorities for the next state biennium (July 1, 2005 through June 30, 2007). The
Board recommends the following five priorities to ensure a successful
Washington's noxious wed control program:
- To monitor, document, and classify noxious weeds in Washington
- To have activated and funded noxious weed control boards or districts in
every county in Washington
- To improve statewide noxious weed education and public awareness
programs
- To improve successful working relationships with federal, tribal, and
state land management agencies, and to help secure adequate funding for weed
control on these lands
- To continue with current funding levels from the state general fund to
support Board and Department noxious weed control programs
