Other common names: Robert Geranium, Stinky Bob
Plant family:
Geraniaceae
Year listed: 1997
Native to: Europe

Why is it a noxious weed?

Herb Robert poses a threat to the forest understory and to plant biodiversity in forests of western Washington. It is capable of growing under full canopy closure in very dense populations and is considered a vigorous, plant. Where it occurs there appear to be fewer native herbaceous species.

How would I identify it?

General Description:  Herb Robert is both a winter and a spring annual. It is a low growing plant.

Leaves:

  • deeply dissected
  • light green in color
  • in late fall, foliage turns red
  • when crushed has a pungent odor

Flowers:

  • pink
  • five petals

Stems:

  • fork
  • brittle at the joints

How does it reproduce?

Herb Robert reproduces by. The seeds are ejected ballistically, in response to drying of the capsule. Reports indicate that they may be ejected as far as 15 to 20 feet from the mother plant.

Where does it grow?

Herb Robert is highly adaptable. It is found in moist forests with canopy closure, in forest gaps and more open canopies, and on dry rocky outcrops. It is also becoming a significant garden pest in some areas. It is found from sea level to mid-mountainous areas in both the Cascades and Olympics.

What is the distribution in Washington State?

  • Herb Robert has been documented primarily west of the Cascade crest although it extends along the Columbia River in Klickitat County. In some western counties it is widespread, although still expanding fast into new territory. In other areas it appears in only a few to no populations.

  • Distribution map not available at this time.

How do I control it?

General control methods: Herb Robert is fairly easy to hand pull. Herbicide is generally effective.

Cultural: Information not available a this time.

Herbicide: Please refer to the PNW Weed Management Handbook, or contact your county noxious weed coordinator.

Mechanical: Herb Robert has a very shallow, week root system which makes hand pulling easy. Mowing also keeps it under control if done early in the season.

Biological: The known biological controls also seek out other species of geranium.
